Our Trip to la Cabane à Sucre
by Sebastien Chenier

Hi, it's me Sebastien.  I just got back from another adventure that I wanted to share with you.  On Saturday we went to the "Sucrerie-de-la-Montagne", in Rigaud Quebec.  It's a "cabane à sucre" (or a "sugar shack", for you English peoples).  This is where they make maple syrup in the spring.
We started off by taking a horse drawn sleigh ride.

For those of you that don't know, the majority of the maple syrup in the world comes from Quebec.  It seems they have lots of maple trees.

Here's where they make the maple syrup
It's a French-Canadian tradition to pour hot syrup in the snow, then roll it on a stick and eat it.  So, we gave it a try...

Sacha seemed to like the taste

After our snack outside, we went inside the cabane à sucre for some tasty French-Canadian food.  We had pea soup, homemade bread, eggs, sausages, bacon, pancakes, meatballs, tortierre (meat pies), homemade catsups and pickles, sugar pie, and of course lots of maple syrup.  Daddy tells me that this is the kind of foods that my ancestors ate when they first moved to Canada.

I really liked the stuffed animals they had inside for decorations

We listened to lots of traditional french-canadian music, because there was a man who played us songs with his guitar.  Sacha and I even helped by playing Quebec's "official" musical instrument - the wood spoons-

here we are making some music with the spoons

After our big meal, it was time to go home.  I made sure to check on the maple syrup production on the way out...

looks like there's still lots of syrup left for everyone else

That's all for now, but I'll be sure to write again soon.
